International recognition for RRII Scientist
08 July 2014

Dr. Jacob Mathew, Jt. Director (Mycology / Plant Pathology), Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) has been presented with an award in recognition of his contribution to the development of sustainable rubber effluent management systems and value addition to rubber in Nigeria. He was deputed on the request of Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria and installed a treatment plant in Nigeria and also trained officials on waste water management.

Dr. Jacob Mathew has developed a highly efficient integrated waste water treatment technology for the treatment of rubber sheet processing effluent. The High Rate Methonogenic Reactor (HRMR), the most important component of the integrated treatment system developed by him is unique in reducing the pollution up to 98 per cent within a day. By adopting this treatment technology ‘zero discharge’ of effluent is possible in rubber sheet processing. The final treated water can is reused for processing. Enhanced production of Methane gas is an additional feature of this treatment technology.
