U.S. Patent for Rubber Research Institute of India
Kottayam 20 June 2014

Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) has got an American patent (US Patent No. US8,7716,366 B2) for the research related to development of industry standard and application focused ready to use rubber mixes for the rubber industry, using techniques that are environment friendly and energy efficient. The research work was undertaken by Dr. Rosamma Alex (Dy. Director, Rubber Technology), Mr. K.K. Sasidharan (Assistant Rubber Technologist) and Dr. James Jacob (Director) of RRII.

For the production of rubber products including tyres, the most critical process is mixing rubber with different ingredients like plasticizers, vulcanizing agents, antidegradants and fillers. This mixing process pollutes the ambient air to a great extent, if the commonly preferred fillers like carbon black, silica and clay are used. Further this is a very energy intensive process during the manufacture of rubber products. The issues related to air pollution and higher energy consumption during filler incorporation in dry rubber can be avoided to a great extent if fillers are incorporated in the latex.

Tyre makers and raw materials suppliers are concentrating on development of technologies to meet the magic triangle properties like road grip, durability and fuel efficiency for tyres. Generally fuel efficiency improves at the expense of road grip and durability. RRII has succeeded in challenging the magic triangle properties of tyre compounds and other issues like air pollution and higher energy consumption during mill mixing, using a latex filler masterbatch consisting of carbon black, silica and nanoclay as a ready to use raw material for the rubber industry.
