In pursuit of developing a mechanized tapping knife, the Rubber Board has distributed consolation prizes of Rs.50, 000/- each to four entrepreneurs who have developed prototypes of mechanized tapping knife. The prize money was distributed by Sri. K.M. Mani, Minister for Finance, Govt. of Kerala, in the valedictory function of RPS Silver jubilee celebrations held at Kottayam. The meeting was presided over by Smt. Sheela Thomas, Chairman, Rubber Board. Sri. P.K. Subash, Sri. P.V. Joseph, Sri. A.G. Somanathan and Sri. M.N. Sasidharan are the winners in the primary selection, done by the Rubber Board.
The Rubber Board has come forward with the decision of developing a mechanized tapping device as part of its ongoing efforts to bring about technological innovations in the field of tapping and to address the problem of shortage of skilled tappers in the sector. A mechanized tapping knife that can even be handled by unskilled people can make revolutionary changes in the harvesting of rubber.
The selection was made from 61 entrepreneurs who have applied for the cash award. The four prototypes (motorized and non motorized tapping knives) were selected by an expert committee after different stages of evaluation. Further research and developments of these prototypes will be monitored by the Latex Harvest Technology Division of the Rubber Research Institute of India. Rubber Board will give a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh to the final winner.
