The Trend

Production of natural rubber (NR) did not increase during August 2002 as compared to August 2001. The production was 51475 tonnes as against 51485 tonnes during August 2001. The total production during hte first five months of the current year, which was 223155 tonnes, was higher by 2.6 percent as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The production provisionally estimated for September 2002 is 58,000 tonnes.

Consumption of NR decreased during August 2002 to 57835 tonnes from 58920 tonnes during July 2002. The total quality of NR consumed by the rubber goods manufacturing industry in the country during April to
August 2002 was 284510 tonnes and the increase was 7.0 percent from the corresponding period of the previous year. The increase in consumption during he period was 10.3 percent in the auto-tyre manufacturing sector and 3.9% in the general rubber goods sector. The consumption provisionally estimated for September 2002 is 57,000 tonnes

Import of NR into the country during August 2002 was 5067 tonnes as against 7415 tonnes during August 2001. The total import of NR during the period from April to August 2002 was 11356 tonnes as against 12783 tonnes during the same period of the previous year. India exported 1200 tonnes of NR during August 2002 making the total export during April to August 2002 at 14479 tonnes as against 310 tonnes exported during April to August 2001. Total stock of NR at the end of August 2002 was 128720 tonnes.

The production of synthetic rubber (SR) registered a substantial increase during August 2002 to 7190 tonnes from 5905 tonnes during July 2002. The total production of SR during April to August 2002, which was 32244 tonnes was 20.5 percent higher than the corresponding period of the previous year. Rubber goods manufacturing industry in the country consumed 16790 tonnes of SR during August 2002 as against 16370 tonnes during the previous month. The quantity of 78655 tonnes of SR consumed during hte period from April to August 2002 was higher by 10.3 percent when comparedd with the same period of the previous year.

The trend in the prices of different grades of NR at Kottayam market for the period from October 2001 to October 2002 is given in the following table.
