Production of Natural Rubber(NR) increased during January 2002 to 73,030 tonnes from 70,550 tonnes during January 2001. However, the increase in production was nominal at 0.6 percent during the first ten months of 2001 - 02 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. the production during the period April 2001 to January 2002 was 564,400 tonnes as against 560,785 tonnes during the same period in previous year. The production provisionally estimated for February 2002 is 32,000 tonnes.
Consumption of NR increased marginally to 54,950 tonnes during January 2002 from 54,425 tonnes during December 2001. The total consumption of NR during the first ten months of 2001 - 02 showed only a marginal increase of 0.3 percent as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Total consumption during the period April to January 2002 was 530,735 tonnes as against 529,065 tonnes during the same period of the previous period . In the general rubber goods sector consumption increased by 2.5 percent where as in the auto-tyre sector it registered a decline of 2.0 percent during the ten-months period. Consumption provisionally estimated for February 2002 is 53,000 tonnes.
With the import of 5,268 tonnes of NR during January 2002, the total quantity of NR imported by rubber goods manufacturing industry in the country during the first ten months of 2001 - 02 came to 42,404 tonnes as against 8083 tonnes during the corresponding period in the previous year. The export during January 2002 was 857 tonnes and the total stock as at the end of January 2002 was 247,990 tonnes.
Production of synthetic rubber(SR) decreased to 5,775 tonnes during January 2002 from 6,161 tonnes during December 2001. however, the total production of SR during the ten months period from April 2001 to January 2002, which was 56,116 tonnes, showed an increase 4.1 percent over the corresponding period of the previous year. Consumption of SR increased to 15,210 tonnes during January 2002 from 14,805 tonnes during December 2001. The total quantity consumed during the period from April 2001 to January 2002 showed an increase of 1.3 percent, to 144,450 tonnes from 142,545 tonnes during the same period in the previous year.
